Code of Ethics

The Australian Secondary Principals’ Association is committed to enhancing the professional standing of those in secondary principalship. The professional standing depends on three aspects:

    * commitment to an effective code of ethics;
    * dedication to the welfare of students; and,
    * achievement and maintenance of the highest levels of competence in the areas relevant to leadership in education.

Consistent with the Constitution of the Association, this Code of Ethics for the Association is a statement to which all certificated members of the Association express and demonstrate their commitment.

The professional commitment of Principalship is to the development of students as responsible individuals in a just and caring society. Members recognise this responsibility in the context students are associated with schools over a significant formative period of their lives, moving from substantial dependence on others to a high level of independence and a clear acceptance of interdependence. Members:

   1. recognise their primary responsibility as being to support growth in the intellect and character of students in the school;
   2. see the school as a learning community, committed to the personal growth of all its members, both students and staff;
   3. have a key professional task as the educational leader, with final responsibility in the school for the quality of its curriculum, its assessment and reporting, its teaching and learning processes;
   4. continue to develop professional knowledge, skills and attitudes and seek to share these with colleagues;
   5. have a shared but ultimate responsibility for building staff team-work for the mission of the school;
   6. and staff will work jointly to develop a constructive relationship with parents, as the students’ first teachers, and with the broader community;
   7. accept and respect the obligations of the school to the broader society, whose values are a part of the school’s culture and on whom the school depends for moral and material support;
   8. take a responsible role in the professional growth and career development of staff in the school;
   9. endeavour to be consistent between a stated commitment to values and the practices and processes within the school;
10. exhibit loyalty to employing authorities, consistent with our commitment to service to the school community;
11. are committed to the support of the profession through the ASPA and other professional bodies.
12. will behave in a manner which exhibits the highest standards of integrity.
